Chess Camp by High School Champions Report
I am happy to report the Chess Camp by State High School Champions held on Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Mountain Lake Public Schools was a success.

Michael Yang, Minnesota Scholastic Champion, and Matt Anzis, Iowa Scholastic Champion, presented Tactics and Opening sessions, respectively, to twelve eager students. Students also had a session on Endgame, as well as a puzzle and blitz competitions. Ten students from four Minnesota cities (St. Peter, Mankato, Lakefield and Mountain Lake) were joined by two student from Sibley, Iowa.

The chess camp had three objectives:

  • Fundraiser to offset expenses for the two scholastic champions in their upcoming Denker Invitational Tournament of High School Champions to be held at Indianapolis, Indiana in early August;
  • Teach students some basic and sound principles of chess to help elevate their level of play; and
  • Help grow chess in the Southwest Minnesota and Northwest Iowa regions.

We would like to thank Mountain Lake Chess Club and Mountain Lake Public Schools for hosting the camp. We also greatly appreciate Dr. Steven Harder and Southwest Minnesota Chess for sponsoring the event with their contributions of $120 and $100, respectively. Dr. Harder also donated the meals for students and adults, ensuring 100% of the proceeds were provided to the two benefactors. Each of our two champions were presented with a check of $200 to help with their expenses at the Denker tournament.

Also helping with the camp presentations were Hank Anzis, Sam Smith, Dr. Harder and John Flores.

Chess Camp offered by State High School Champions

Southwest Minnesota Chess, in collaboration with Mountain Lake Chess Club and Sibley Chess Club, is sponsoring a series of presentations and chess camp to draw awareness on the benefits of chess in education. We hope to encourage school districts and communities to begin new chess programs or expand existing efforts.

In addition to building awareness, we are raising funds to help defray expenses for Matt Anzis and Michael Yang. Matt and Micheal won their state high school championships and will represent their state at a national event. They will compete at the Invitational Denker Tournament of High School Champions on August 1-4, 2009, and held as a side event to the U.S Open. This year, both tournaments will be held at Indianapolis, Indiana.

The two champions will lead a chess camp to be held at Mountain Lake Public schools on June 13, 2009. The cost of the camp is $15 and open to all students. All proceeds from the camp, donations and community sponsorships will be divided equally between the two Denker representatives.

Chess Club of Minnesota's "Stay Sharp" Weekly Chess Event Starts in June
The “Stay Sharp” event is held every Monday afternoon from 1:00 – 2:30 pm, and runs from June 15 to August 17 (8 weeks).
The event will be held at the Eden Prairie Senior Center, and features both a novice/intermediate section and an advanced section. A full 8-week session and shorter 4-week sessions are being offered to best accommodate summer vacation plans.

The advanced group will play with longer time controls than the novice/intermediate group, and will play fewer games overall. Chess sets will be provided, but players are encouraged to bring chess sets, and especially clocks, if they have them.

Trophies will be awarded to the top player in each section, and all players will receive a chess medal. No instruction is included during these sessions. Although the program is open to all kids 1st through 12th grade, it is not intended for beginners. Players in the novice/intermediate group are expected to know the rules of chess, know how to checkmate, etc.

The cost is $52 for the full 8 week session, $32 for the 4 week session.
Players are encouraged to register soon, as space is limited. The registration deadline is June 5, 2009.

Registration information can be found at the club website: . You can also email Pat LaVone for more information or a registration form: pjlavone©juno.com.

Note: No sessions will be held July 6 or August 10, 2009.
